与《算牌人》最相像的是斯科塞斯的《爱尔兰人》，二者都在本是绚烂张扬的类型里拍出了萧索之气。施拉德那新教徒般的节制在这个寓言中显出恐怖的一面来，他的男主角的道德性即体现于这种节制，他是一个能算牌的人，能看透坐庄的美国体系里自洽的极权性，却只稍作利用以维系生活而不加追究。直到最后，他才成了真正的威廉·退尔，一个斗士。他在自由之时却似乎活在玻璃监牢里，而在监狱中反而获得了真正的自由。
